I am a 77 year old part-time cabinet maker and I want to share my original ideas that I have designed and built into all the cabinets that I made for all the kitchen renovations that I have done to keep myself busy, while enjoying my retirement for the past 17 years. Sadly, for the past 3 years, I have developed a tinnitus problem that has interrupted by ability to do any cabinet building. REFRIGERATOR TOP CABINET
This is a very typical setup found in most kitchens and surprisingly this setup is still standard in kitchens of new homes built today. The topic of this post is not directed to the ‘setup’ but to draw your attention to the cabinet that is above the refrigerator. It is very obvious that anyone trying to access that cabinet will have some difficulties and at this point, this discussion will be left to the last time you reached for that cabinet over your refrigerator.
Here is my solution to resolve this scenario with the cabinet above your refrigerator.
Specialty – Kitchen Renovation
The most recent renovation project I did was most challenging, because the homeowner (a good friend) had already disassembled the entire kitchen. Cabinets were all taken down and stripped apart. His plans were to use the original cabinet boxes, while refinishing the doors and drawer faces, because they were all made of koa. He just wanted new laminated counter tops.

Do you have a pantry in your kitchen? It could be one of those ‘broom’ type closets with a single door that have been retrofitted with several shelves in it.
The pantry shown here is one that compliments the cabinets beside it. This particular pantry had several fixed shelves that were stacked up toward the ceiling. You have seen many of these types of pantries and there are many types of hardwares available that can be easily retrofitted into that space, after removing those shelves. I chose to design and build a new pantry with 2 sections. The bottom section is a typical base cabinet with 2 pull-out trays on full extension sliders. The upper section holds 4 pull-out racks with 2 trays each. The racks are also on full extension sliders. Imagine having this pantry built for your kitchen!
